F.U.N. Parent/Caregiver Group Co-Facilitator:
For nearly 30 years the Canopy Center has offered weekly groups to parents and caregivers based on a guided, self-help model. Families United Network (F.U.N.) groups are informational, educational and confidential. Members share feelings and experiences, problem-solve, and enjoy mutual support to bring about positive change in their families. Volunteers will gain experience in group and family dynamics, enhance their cultural awareness, learn about issues facing parents and families with special needs and will develop their communication and group facilitation skills. Previous group facilitation experience is desirable, but not necessary. Training is provided. A minimum one-year commitment is required.
F.U.N. Children/Teen Group Co-Facilitator:
F.U.N. group facilitators organize and manage groups for children and teens while their parents or caregivers participate in support groups. Planned activities focus on topics such as developing self-esteem, making and keeping friends, resolving conflicts and handling strong emotions. Volunteers gain valuable experience working with kids and will develop listening, communication and group facilitation skills. Training is provided. A minimum six-month commitment is required. F.U.N. groups are conducted in both English and Spanish. Bi-Lingual volunteers are strongly encouraged to apply.
Parent Stressline Parent Advocate:
Make a difference and enjoy the flexibility of volunteering from your home or cell phone and choosing shifts according to your availability each week! The Parent Stressline is a support line for parents and caregivers who are experiencing stress or just need someone to listen. Parent Advocates offer "friendly listening" support and referral information to anonymous callers 16-hours a day, 7-days a week. Answering the Parent Stressline prepares volunteers for careers in human services, therapy, medicine, case management, education, family law and more - all without leaving home! Volunteers must complete an initial 16-hour comprehensive training, as well as on-going seminars, to continue the education needed to serve callers on the line. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a Parent Advocate is welcome to attend an orientation session to learn more before making a commitment.
Childcare Assistant:
Childcare volunteers mentor and support children ages 0-6 while their parents and caregivers attend support or treatment groups. Often these children require some positive role modeling or extra one-on-one attention. Volunteers make a difference by reading, doing art projects or just having fun in our brand-new indoor & outdoor childcare facility. Childcare volunteers utilize and gain skills related to early childhood development, caring for children with special needs and learn about child abuse/neglect and family dynamics. Training is provided. A minimum six-month commitment is required.
Kitchen Assistant:
The Canopy Center runs support groups for families. We believe that serving a hot meal before groups start is a great way to foster togetherness and comfort. Volunteers work in teams of two to prepare the meal and assist with clean-up. No previous experience is necessary; training is provided. We accept court-ordered community service volunteers for this position.
