Benefiting Teen & Youth Sexual Abuse Treatment

Come Back Coffee was named, with permission and support, for the book Come Back: A Mother and Daughter’s Journey Through Hell and Back, a true story about a daughter’s descent into the “underbelly of society”, following childhood sexual abuse, and her mother’s efforts to bring her back.  One of the girls in the program designed the label, the girls came up with the name and they have begun to sell the product.

One of the girls in the program e-mailed the authors and they were so impressed by the courage these girls displayed while healing from incest and the innovative methods the program uses to empower the girls, that the authors agreed to waive their $15,000 speaking engagement fee to join the girls for a weekend. The authors recently came to Madison, free of charge, for a retreat with the girls in the Canopy Center’s teen girls sexual abuse treatment program.

The teen girls who created and organized this fundraising project chose to sell fair trade coffee from the entirely female owned and managed LaFem Growers Cooperative of the Nicaraguan Highlands, as well as the Mut Vitz Grower Co. of Mexico. These cooperatives use their fair trade premiums for community based projects like women’s health initiatives, women’s education, peace efforts in the warn-torn region of Chiapas, and more.
